The effort to preserve the Elkhart Lake Historic Race Circuits
began in 2005 when a small group of sports car and vintage racing enthusiasts
who believed the Elkhart Lake Historic Race Circuits should be preserved and
protected for the enjoyment of current and future generations joined together to
oppose the plans of the Sheboygan County Highway Department to demolish and
reroute the southern portion of the circuits. After an extended struggle, the
Highway Department withdrew it’s plan for reconstruction and in 2007 the
historic circuitss were recorded on the National Register of Historic Places.
Recording on the National Register affords a degree of
protection for the circuits but long term preservation requires an ongoing
proactive program with resources commensurate to the task. Events of the past
several years made it clear that continued preservation of the historic circuits
is likely to exceed the limited resources of the original founders of the
preservation program.
Since the inception of the preservation efforts, many likeminded
enthusiasts have expressed an interest in supporting the preservation effort and
participation in HRC sponsored activities. To that end, the Preservation Society
was created as membership organization open to anyone who shares our dedication
to historic preservation and enthusiasm for racing history or the simple joy of
owning and driving sports cars.
